6 LAWS OF UX THAT GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR DESIGNS

The laws of UX aren't really laws in the legislative sense - they don't mandate anything, and breaking them carries no penalty other than a worse product.

They are better understood as well-documented patterns in human behaviour that have proven robust enough across enough contexts to be worth treating as reliable. Six of the most useful ones follow.

Hick's law

Hick's law states that the time it takes to reach a decision increases with the number and complexity of choices available.

Named after psychologist William Edmund Hick, who formalised the relationship in the 1950s alongside Ray Hyman, it captures something that feels obvious once stated but is consistently violated in practice.

The failure mode is abundance: designers add options because options feel like generosity, but from the user's perspective each additional choice is a small additional burden.

Navigation menus that extend to fifteen items, pricing pages with six tiers, checkout flows with five payment options beyond the one the user actually wants - all of these are Hick's law violations dressed up as features. The principle is not to remove all choice, but to remove all unnecessary choice; the distinction matters because the former makes a product feel spartan, whilst the latter makes it feel considered.

Aesthetic usability effect

The aesthetic usability effect describes the tendency to perceive visually attractive products as more functional and easier to use - regardless of whether that perception is accurate.

Users extend greater tolerance to usability problems in aesthetically pleasing designs, and are more likely to attribute errors to their own misunderstanding rather than to a design failure.

This creates an interesting asymmetry: good visual design provides a degree of error budget that poor visual design doesn't, because the goodwill of an attractive first impression is slow to erode.

The risk, of course, is using this tolerance as cover for avoiding actual usability work; a beautiful product that consistently fails users will eventually exhaust that goodwill regardless. The more useful reading is that visual craft and functional craft are not in competition - investing in one creates room for the other to be received more charitably, and the combination is more powerful than either alone.

Jakob's law

Jakob's law, named after usability researcher Jakob Nielsen, states that users spend most of their time on products other than yours - which means they arrive with expectations shaped by everything else they've used before.

When your product conforms to those expectations, using it costs less mental energy; when it contradicts them, users have to learn something that could have been borrowed for free.

The practical implication is often misread as a prohibition on innovation. It isn't.

It's a more specific argument: that novelty belongs in the areas where your product genuinely differs from what came before, not in the interface conventions that users already know how to navigate. Reinventing the navigation pattern so that the menu sits somewhere unexpected is not innovation; it's friction. Reinventing the core product experience in a way that creates real value is something else entirely, and it deserves the full cognitive investment that unconventional conventions don't.

Law of proximity

The law of proximity is one of the Gestalt principles of visual perception: objects that are physically close to each other tend to be perceived as belonging together.

In interface design, this is both the simplest and the most continuously applicable of the laws covered here.

Proximity communicates relationship. A label close to an input field is read as belonging to it; a button close to a form section is read as acting on that section; a caption below an image is read as describing it.

When proximity is handled carelessly - when a label sits equidistant between two inputs, or a button appears closer to the wrong section than the right one - users make errors that feel like their own mistakes but are in fact spatial design failures.

Deliberate use of distance and grouping is one of the cleaner ways to reduce cognitive load without adding any explicit visual information; the space between things carries meaning just as surely as the things themselves.

Pareto principle

The Pareto principle - the 80/20 rule - describes a pattern observed across a remarkable range of phenomena: roughly 80% of outcomes derive from 20% of inputs.

Pareto, an Italian economist, originally noted it in land distribution; subsequent observation found it recurring in business revenue, software defects, customer complaints, and a great deal else.

For product design, the most direct application is in prioritisation. A small proportion of a product's features account for the vast majority of its use, and a small proportion of its users account for the vast majority of its traffic.

Designing for the full range with equal attention to everything spreads effort thinly across areas that will never be noticed; identifying the 20% that drives 80% of the value - and ensuring that 20% is genuinely excellent - is a more honest allocation of limited resources. It also applies to usability testing: fixing the handful of problems that cause the most friction will almost always return more value than making marginal improvements across everything else.

Serial position effect

The serial position effect describes how position within a sequence shapes memory: the items encountered first and last are remembered most reliably, whilst the middle tends to fade.

The effect is consistent across contexts - lists, menus, journeys, presentations - which gives it broad applicability throughout the design process.

The consequence for information architecture is direct: the most important items in any sequence should occupy the first or last positions, not the middle. This applies to navigation menus, onboarding steps, pricing tier lists, and checkout summaries alike.

It also applies at the level of the whole user journey: the impressions formed at the beginning and end of an experience disproportionately shape how the entire experience is remembered.

A product that starts well and ends well will be recalled more favourably than one that is consistently adequate - which is a somewhat unsettling finding, but an accurate one.

What these six laws share is that none of them require anything elaborate to apply; they require attention.

Hick's law asks us to count what we're asking users to choose between. The aesthetic usability effect asks us to take visual craft seriously. Jakob's law asks us to study what users already know. The law of proximity asks us to look at our layouts with spatial awareness. The Pareto principle asks us to be honest about where our effort is going. The serial position effect asks us to think carefully about beginnings and endings.

None of these is a technique so much as a habit of noticing - and noticing, in design, is most of the work.
