7 ADDITIONAL COGNITIVE BIASES THAT AFFECT YOUR DESIGN PROCESS

Behavioural psychology and UX have always been entangled, and the more time we spend with users, the more obvious it becomes that the cognitive tendencies shaping their decisions are far more active than we tend to assume.

Here are seven more biases worth building into our understanding.

Familiarity bias

Familiarity bias is the tendency to prefer things we already know - not because they are objectively better, but because familiarity itself carries a kind of comfort that novelty doesn't.

We believe our preferences are rational; the research tends to suggest they are more often retrospective justifications for decisions made below the level of conscious thought.

The design implication is pragmatic: convention is not the enemy of good design. Placing a search icon in the top right, a logo in the top left, a shopping cart in the header - these are not creative constraints, they are inherited familiarity that allows users to arrive in a product and feel oriented before they've learned anything specific.

Where we do choose to deviate from convention, the deviation needs to be worth the cost of the unfamiliarity it introduces, because that cost is real and it falls entirely on the user.

Sunk cost effect

The sunk cost effect describes the tendency to continue investing in something - time, money, effort - simply because we've already invested in it, even when the rational course of action would be to stop.

It produces some of the most clearly irrational decisions people make, and it operates at scale in the relationship users have with competing products.

For designers, this creates a specific challenge. Users who have spent years with an inferior product will not abandon it simply because ours is better; the accumulated investment creates a pull that quality alone can't overcome.

The implication is that the clarity and simplicity of the value proposition matter enormously - not because users need convincing that the new thing is good, but because they need a genuinely compelling reason to absorb the cost of switching. Designing for this means making the path in as frictionless as possible and making the value obvious from the very first interaction.

Zeigarnik effect

The Zeigarnik effect is the tendency to hold incomplete tasks in mind more readily than completed ones; the open loop occupies cognitive space until it closes.

Named after psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, who observed that waiters could recall orders in progress with far more precision than orders already delivered, the effect has become one of the more creatively applicable findings in behavioural psychology.

For product designers, the implication is that incompleteness is a feature, not a flaw - when used deliberately. A profile that is 70% complete, a reading progress indicator, a course half-finished: each of these creates an open loop that draws the user back.

The key distinction is between genuine incompleteness that serves the user's goals and manufactured incompleteness designed purely to drive engagement; the first builds a product worth returning to, the second builds resentment.

Serial position effect

The serial position effect describes a consistent pattern in human memory: in any given sequence of items, we are most likely to recall the first ones (the primacy effect) and the last ones (the recency effect), whilst the middle tends to blur.

The finding is robust across contexts, which makes it unusually useful as a design principle.

The application is most direct in navigation and content hierarchies. The items at the beginning and end of a list, a menu, or a set of options will be remembered more reliably than those in between - which means the most important options should occupy those positions.

It also applies to user journeys: the first impression and the final moment of a flow disproportionately shape how the whole experience is remembered, which is why both onboarding and checkout deserve more careful attention than they typically receive.

Cashless effect

When money doesn't change hands in a visible, physical way, people spend more of it and feel less resistance in doing so.

The cashless effect is one of the reasons digital transactions are so much easier to make than their equivalent in physical currency, and it's also one of the reasons frictionless payment experiences have driven so much commercial growth - removing the visceral sense of loss that accompanies handing over cash changes the psychology of the exchange entirely.

The ethical dimension here is worth naming directly. Used well, this principle means designing a payment or commitment flow that is clear, confident, and efficient - removing unnecessary steps without removing transparency.

Used poorly, it means obscuring the cost of a decision at the precise moment the user is least equipped to scrutinise it. The distinction lies in whether the reduction in friction serves the user's genuine intention or exploits the moment when their guard is down.

Goal gradient effect

As we approach a milestone, our motivation to continue increases.

The goal gradient effect - first observed in rats moving faster as they neared a food reward, later confirmed across a wide range of human contexts - describes the way proximity to a goal amplifies engagement with the process of reaching it.

Duolingo applies this well across several features, but the league system is the most direct: once a user has placed any effort into a session, they're positioned on a visible path toward a concrete ranking, and the proximity to the next boundary drives continued engagement far more effectively than an abstract point total would.

The design principle for us is to make progress visible and make goals specific; a user who can see that they are 70% of the way to something will invest more in closing that gap than a user making identical progress without the visual feedback to confirm it.

Decision fatigue

The quality of our decisions deteriorates the more decisions we are asked to make in sequence.

Decision fatigue accumulates quickly - it's been documented in parole board hearings, in medical prescriptions written late in a shift, in the choices people make at the end of long shopping flows - and it is one of the most straightforwardly applicable findings in cognitive psychology for anyone designing interactions that require sustained user choice.

The onboarding process is the most common site of this failure in digital products. An onboarding that asks users to configure fifteen options before they've had a chance to experience the product asks them to make meaningful decisions without the information those decisions require; the result is either exhausted compliance or abandonment.

The design response is to reduce, defer, and simplify: surface decisions only when the user has the context to make them well, and default everything else to something that genuinely serves them.

Across all seven of these biases, there is a shared quality worth naming: they are not weaknesses to be exploited but tendencies to be understood.

Users who feel a product is working with their psychology rather than around it - or against it - develop a different kind of relationship with it, one built on something that is harder to displace than feature parity alone. The psychology isn't a trick. It's a description of the person we're designing for.
