James J. Gibson introduced the concept of affordances in the 1970s as a way of describing the relationship between objects and the actions available to the people who encounter them. Since then, the concept found its way into interaction design through Don Norman's work in the 1980s, and it has been central to thinking about usability ever since; understanding what visual and behavioural cues signal about how something should be used is, in large part, what it means to design with the user's mind rather than against it.
The core insight is deceptively simple: users do not read products - they assume them. Every element of an interface communicates something about how it functions, and that communication happens not through instruction but through visual logic accumulated from a lifetime of encounters with the physical and digital world.
Designing with this in mind is what the title of this post means by intuition; not guesswork, but a rigorous understanding of what users already know.
Understanding affordances
There are many ways to categorise affordances, but the two that matter most for practice are perceived and real. Understanding the gap between them - and closing it wherever possible - is one of the foundational tasks of interaction design.
Perceived Affordance: The possible actions of an interface based on its visual cues, based on subjective experience (Including cultural backgrounds, pre-existing knowledge, and personal experience)
A door handle with a flat surface invites the user to push; if it is actually an automatic door, the mechanism behind the action is invisible but the signal was clear. The flat handle communicated an invitation that proved correct.
Real Affordance: The possible actions of an interface, regardless of how the user perceives it. These are the actual and intended functions of an interface.
When a door has a bar handle, it invites pulling; if pulling opens it, the perceived and real affordance are perfectly aligned. The mechanism does what the object says it will do.
This alignment is the target. When it is achieved, the user does not think - they simply act, and the action is successful.
The psychology of consistency
The reason consistency matters so deeply in design is neurological before it is aesthetic. The brain is extraordinarily efficient at pattern recognition; when we encounter something that behaves like other things we have used before, we transfer our knowledge from those prior experiences without conscious effort.
This is why a button that looks like a button invites clicking without instruction; and why a design that changes the visual logic of buttons mid-product generates the specific kind of friction that users feel but cannot always name.
Consistency operates at multiple scales: within a single interface, across different surfaces of the same product, and across products more broadly. The last of these is where the concept of affordance becomes most powerful.
When we align our choices with conventions established across the ecosystem - the way a back-button works, the way a form field signals an error, the way a swipe gesture behaves - we allow users to bring their entire prior knowledge to bear; discoverability improves, the learning curve flattens, and the experience simply works
When affordances don't travel
The complication is culture. Cultural context shapes the way affordances are interpreted, sometimes substantially.
A gesture that signals dismissal in one context signals confirmation in another; a colour that means danger in one tradition means mourning in another; a layout convention that reads as clean in one market reads as sparse in another. These are not edge cases but core design considerations for any product operating across cultural boundaries.
Digital product design is a young enough discipline that we have not had time, as a field, to fully converge on universal standards - and some of those standards may not be achievable in principle, given how meaningfully cultural context shapes perception.
The practical implication is not paralysis but rigour: thorough research, genuine testing across audiences, and a design stance that treats cultural sensitivity not as a localisation problem to be solved at the end of the project but as a design constraint from the beginning.
Becoming the new wheel
Occasionally a design moves beyond the existing conventions and creates new ones; it stops reinventing the wheel and becomes the wheel. Progressive disclosure was an innovation before it was a convention; now it is simply how forms are expected to work.
Gamification as a habit-forming mechanism was a deliberate choice before it became a standard tool. Machine learning-driven personalisation was a differentiator before it was a baseline expectation.
These shifts happened not through novelty alone but because each approach genuinely served users better than what it replaced: it reduced cognitive load, increased clarity, or delivered a more relevant experience.
The lesson for designers is not that innovation is always possible or always worth pursuing, but that when testing, research, and genuine empathy with users point toward a better way, the fact that it differs from convention is not a sufficient reason to hold back.
Most of the time, established affordance is the right choice - because it is what users already know, and what they know is what allows them to move through an experience without friction. But sometimes the new approach, tested carefully and built with real attention to the user's experience of it, becomes the next thing everyone knows.
Affordances are one of the clearest examples of how cognitive psychology and design practice meet; understanding them well is not an optional refinement but a foundational competence.
What we are doing, when we design with affordance, is taking seriously what users already know - and building experiences that work with that knowledge rather than around it.
